Real-world experience is a highly valued commodity in the digital design world. The Digital Arts Center will work with all academically qualified students to coordinate internships at select job sites. Here are a few of the local businesses who have generously offered an internship to a UC San Diego Digital Arts Center student or graduate.
Our Alumni have obtained prosperous careers in a wide variety of fields including:
Graphic designers generate the visual presentation and design of goods, including websites, detergent boxes, album covers, and dog food. Their work is usually done on a project basis. A graphic designer must be able to synthesize feedback from a number of different sources into a distinctive image; use research prepared by a marketing department and cost specifications determined by a budgeting department; and produce a variety of sketches and models that demonstrate different approaches to the product. This takes a person who can listen to comments and has a good eye for aesthetic design, a flair for color, and a solid understanding of the needs of the corporate world.
Art directors oversee the artistic design of advertisements and print materials, as well as the filming of television commercials. They are the decision makers who are responsible for the quality of the finished product. The art director chooses a photographer, an illustrator, models, and any props necessary for an ad. If a print ad comes back from the printer with an imperfection, the art director is responsible for retouching it. In advertising, the art director is not only responsible for the "look" of an ad but is also part of a creative team responsible for developing the very concept. An art director and a copywriter (who writes the ads) may decide on an advertising concept together. Then they determine how the ad will look and what it will say.
The Multimedia Developer's role is to provide media development services for projects, products, and applications across the enterprise. This includes designing, building, and implementing new multimedia pages, graphics, and CD-ROMs; integrating these with back end applications and company Web sites/intranet; and performing day-to-day administration of the organization?s multimedia portfolio. Use of a variety of Web development languages is essential.
The Sound Designer interprets the requirements of a production in terms of sound collection. They will work closely with the Production Mixer, Sound Supervisor, the Editor, and the Director to create original sound elements to production requirements, using synthesisers and combinations of sounds. Good communication skills are needed, along with imagination and creative flair to produce original sound elements and effects. The ability to accept direction and work well with others is also important.
